-Albus Dumbledore at the end of the year speech in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Surprise, surprise. One of the quotes that has really made an impact on me is from Harry Potter. If you have not yet read this book yet or have not seen the movie, you might be wondering who the heck Cedric Diggory is. But I’m not about to give out any spoiler so I advise you to skip the movie and read the books first!^^
But even without knowing the story behind this quote, the wisdom is not lost. I’ve always been used to the idea that in order to be a good person, I must avoid the path of “evil” at all cost. Lying, cheating and stealing; the obvious bad stuff.
However this passage has been a constant reminder that life is never JUST a battle of good vs. evil. Life is also about the seemingly insignificant choices we make each second.
It’s easier to ignore the rules, to make excuses, to do that particular something “just this once“. This shortcuts are so darn convenient, one day we will find ourselves living a life full consequences brought by these easy actions. A time will come when taking the easy route is already deeply ingrained in our personality, that such decisions have already become a norm. Us humans are, after all, creatures of habit.
It’s never easy to admit that I am wrong and say, “I’m sorry”. Some people make it difficult to be nice and polite. It can be so frustrating to do the right thing and NOT even be recognized. It takes discipline to wake up every day and be responsible.
Doing the right thing might not always be easy.
But hey, whoever said life is, right?
